Dear customers, colleagues, and friends,
Welcome to a new edition of the AFMG® Newsletter. These quarterly issues inform you about software updates, classes, and interesting downloads related to our products.

AFMG Navigated 2020 Well, Sets Course for 2021

The Covid-19 pandemic has affected our industry badly in many ways. Restrictions, especially in the events and entertainment sectors, still remain in place. At AFMG we are doing our best to be a reliable partner during these difficult times. We continue to work hard on advancing our services and software solutions for our customers worldwide.
As AFMG’s work approach is strongly team-based, the pandemic forced us to adapt and restructure our daily routine to keep up creativity and efficiency in times of home office and home schooling. Now we are glad that despite severe limitations we have succeeded in pursuing our goals for 2020 with a clear focus. Our areas of activity included in particular:
  • The Early Adopter version of EASE 5 has progressed substantially. Thanks to the feedback of the participants in the Early Adopter Program various new features were added and software workflows have been improved.
  • The next generation of the well-known loudspeaker DLL interface has advanced measurably by the release of a significantly extended version of the Plug-In API for GLLs. By embedding customized features into loudspeaker GLLs, more realistic control and simulation can be achieved.
  • In cooperation with our training partners worldwide, seminars and workshops have been successfully converted to online formats.

In addition to the above, we have been able to use the past months to consolidate and optimize our internal processes and tools. These changes freed up resources and will give us a good basis to work more efficiently on future tasks.
We are also pleased to report further positive news about our staff. Besides Silke Boegelein, who joined the technical support team 9 months ago, we are very glad to welcome Camilo Ocampo as a new member of our development team as of October 1st.
Camilo Ocampo
A native of both Colombia and the US, Camilo studied applied computer science in Berlin, Germany and completed his degree with excellent grades. Having worked for more than 4 years at a pro music store, he also brings substantial practical audio experience to the company. The fact that Camilo has a background in both liberal arts and sciences makes him particularly sensitive to user needs while also enabling him to develop software at the high standards required by AFMG.
“I'm happy to contribute to products that have such high-quality standards. The fact that AFMG practices test-driven software development is of particular interest to me, as it helps me improve my ability to write cleaner, more modularized, and extensible code – while still in the context of audio and acoustics.”

Despite the circumstances, we are optimistic about the New Year and the tasks ahead of us. We are quite sure that 2021 will bring relief to our industry and we can all return to normal business step by step. To facilitate this process and to assist our customers wherever possible, AFMG will be providing special offerings in order to support business development, education, and investments also during the pandemic.

If you think AFMG can be of help for your business, do not hesitate to contact the AFMG Sales team. We will gladly check if and to what extent we can support you.

Calculations According to New Edition of IEC 60268-16

In September 2020, a new edition 5.0 of the IEC 60268-16 standard on speech intelligibility has been published. The new version has to be considered when measuring or modeling the speech transmission index (STI).

For a large number of AFMG software users, speech intelligibility is an essential criterion in the context of the projects they plan and bring to realization. For AFMG products mainly being used in the field of measurement and simulation, the provision of valuable results that allow statements to be made about the STI is therefore an important feature. For this reason, our team took a closer look at the new standard for the objective evaluation of speech intelligibility by means of the STI.

In summary, the key point is that the new standard does not have an impact on the calculation algorithms used in our products. The mathematical definitions of how the modulation transfer functions and the resulting STI figure are computed have not changed. For this reason, no modifications to AFMG’s software are required in order to be compliant also with the latest edition 5 of IEC 60268-16.

What else there is to know:
  • The new version of the standard primarily includes a large number of clarifications, additions and further explanations which contribute significantly to better comprehensibility and easier transfer into practical application. Compared to the previous versions, much more detailed information on post-processing is given and manufacturers of measuring instruments are provided with a comprehensive verification guide.
  • Beyond that, the female test spectrum was removed and the signal test spectrum of the male voice was adjusted. The 125 Hz and 250 Hz frequency bands are now emphasized less compared to the rest of the spectrum. This is relevant when manually entering pre-settings of the speech spectrum and evaluating and interpreting calculation results.
If you wish to obtain a complete overview of the changes or acquire the new standard, we recommend visiting the IEC – International Electrotechnical Commission Publication Page.

In case you have questions about STI in connection with AFMG products, feel free to contact the AFMG Support team.

For 2021 there are no fixed training dates scheduled yet.
